Chief Justice Renato Corona is Guilty, But Where Do We Go From Here?

After 43 trial days of hearing, the Senate sitting as impeachment court have declared Chief Justice Renato Corona guilty. Prosecutors said they have strongly proved that Corona is “morally unfit” to remain as chief justice since he lied about his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) to conceal his wealth. This makes Corona the first government official to be convicted by an impeachment court. (Read more) 

The impeachment outcome should also be a wake up call to Filipinos. It proves the rule of law is strong in the Philippines and Filipinos demand high ethical standards to all public officials. But the result and celebration on the conviction is only meaningful if it teaches Filipinos that politics is nothing but an expression of culture. It should humble us. It is not enough to convict corrupt officials and / or win elections, it’s more important to change hearts and minds as well - to know and be reminded that we serve a God who rules over the affairs of men. And change starts, not in Malacanang but with ourselves and our neighbors.
