Filipino-American Dad Blogger Goes to Final Four 2013, Atlanta

Thanks to the great dads of Dad 2.0 Summit and the champions of freshness Dove Men+Care, my wife and I had a chance to attend the NCAA Final Four game last weekend in Atlanta, GA , where the Louisville Cardinals beat Michigan Wolverines for the 2013 NCAA Championship title. We're winners too. It was our first time to win an all-expense-paid trip out of town and "bonus round" winners because we have an entire 5 days-4 nights stay at the fine Sheraton Atlanta Hotel without our kids to bother us, and boy did we have a blast. The pictures below are proof of our exciting, relaxing and “finally-just-the-two-of-us-have-fun-while-it-lasts” trip to Atlanta.

Protecting My Children from Sexually Explicit Media

My daughter walked into the living room just as Beyonce started her halftime performance at the Super Bowl. But instead of changing the channel, I decided to let her sit on my lap and we watched the pop star together. I had the remote control in the other hand in case Mrs. Jay-Z pulled a Janet Jackson on all of us.

I told my daughter that Beyonce was a popular singer and was part of a pop group before she (my daughter) was born. She recognized some of the songs and was pleased to discover the singer behind the songs she sometimes hears from her friends. After the performance, I asked her what she thought of the show. She said, “I like her songs and the singing but I don’t like her clothes . . . it’s showing too much.” (In my mind I did the Macauley Culkin’s “Yes!” gesture from “Home Alone”).

My Daughter's First 5K Race

Isabelle made it! She completed her first 5K race yesterday in 44.22 minutes. Not bad for an 8 year old first time runner- Of course I’m biased because I’m the dad. Isabelle complained some leg cramps during the race so she walked some parts of it. But she remained enthusiastic and determined to cross the finish line on her own. 

We also raised close to $250.00 for Angel Tree by the end of the day which made her feel extra proud and excited of her accomplishment. We appreciate all who donated!

Team No Excuse Bruce: Thanksgiving Race for Angel Tree

Isabelle, my eldest and 8 years old daughter will be running her first 5K race this Thanksgiving Day. She saw me run the Ashburn Farm 5K race last year and said she wanted to try it next year. The time has come and Isabelle has been running with me and sometimes with her mom on the treadmill to prepare for her first race. To make it more special,  she decided to run and raise funds to help kids in need - children of prisoners. 

These children are in dire need of love. They are too often marginalized -- victims of their parents' choices. Left without some of the most basic necessities, many don't even know what it's like to receive gifts from their parent for Christmas.

Our goal is to use running to change their lives. By raising support for every mile we run, we will be able to provide these children with a Christmas gift and an age-appropriate gospel message.

The Sliming of Filipino & Christian Boxing Champ Manny Pacquiao

Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao is guilty — of being true to his Catholic faith. The gay-marriage mob is guilty — of the very ugly bigotry it claims to abhor. I hope the strength and courage Manny Pacquiao possess inside the boxing ring is the same to withstand the smear campaign and bigotry hurled against him. More importantly, I hope he won't compromise and remain loyal to his faith and the authority of the scriptures he openly proclaims. Same goes to his wife Jinkee and the pastors or church who mentors him.

Manny Pacquiao, the Tim Tebow and Jeremy Lin of Boxing?

It looks like boxing has found their Tim Tebow and Jeremy Lin. Filipino boxing world-champ Manny Pacquiao is now a born again Christian, and he's not keeping his new faith all to himself. He studies the Bible seriously, he leads Bible studies, he evangelizes, he quotes scriptures, and according to reports he turned his back away from his old unhealthy and sinful habits to begin a new life as a follower of God (see video here). He is so high in this faith that he wants to be referred as a "Bible Ambassador" and might retire from his boxing career soon because of the violent nature of the sport. Hope he continues his spiritual journey strong. He needs it to knock out all distractions and temptations. living as a witness for Christ is not easy. It's a daily fight against the hard punches of sin and trials. Be strong Manny Pacquiao and I hope you dig deeper in your faith so you have stronger ground to stand on when you fight.

Broncos Quarterback Tim Tebow and CURE International to Build Hospital in the Philippines

The Tim Tebow Foundation and CURE International have announced plans to build a children's hospital in the Philippines- where Tebow, the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos and a Heisman Trophy winner at the University of Florida, was born. See embedded video below.

The Tebow CURE Hospital in Davao City will be a 30-bed surgical facility focusing primarily on orthopedics. The groundbreaking will be held in January 2012 and the hospital is expected to open in mid-2013.

Manny Pacquiao and Broken Marriage Vows

Instead of joining other reporters and showbiz talk shows on giving endless (and annoying) coverage or analysis on Manny Pacquiao marraige woes, Joey De Leon offered a fictional anecdote that will surely tickle our thoughts regarding a serious marital issue our Pamabansang Kamao has got himself into:

Reporter: “Ah Pacman, sino ba talaga ang dapat sisihin o i--blame dito sa issue tungkol sa iyo at sa isang pretty actress?” 

Pacman: “Palagay ko, ‘yung pari na nag-refereenoong ikasal kami ng asawa ko.”

Reporter: “Bakit mo naman nasabi ‘yon?”

Pacman: “Kasi, ang advice niya sa’kin noon — para daw maging successful ang pagsasama namin eh ilagay ko raw sa gitna naming dalawa si Kristo.”

Reporter: “Sinunod mo naman ba?”

Pacman: “Oo naman … medyo na-wrong spelling lang nang konti.”

Though celebrity scandal can be a bit interesting and amusing, we all need to be reminded that real life effects of infidelity and broken marriage vows are not. The grief and pain families specially children experience are no laughing matter. The best response is to pray for those who are hurting and also look in the mirror to examine our own lives. If you're married, may this be a teaching moment that preserving the sacrament of your marriage should be the greatest fight of your lives. Remember, "what God has joined together, let not man separate.

Tim Tebow: The Philippines is in his Heart

Filipinas Magazine July issue has a feature on American quarterback, Tim Tebow. Tebow plays for the Florida Gators and was the first sophomore to receive the Heisman Trophy award in 2007 - the highest MVP recognition in college football, he is also set to be one of the top NFL draft pick for 2010. The article talked about his life, his near death or abortion birth and his Filipino connection. Despite of his success in his sport he never turned his back from his Christian faith and the people of Cotabato, his birth place. The kids in Cotobato who calls him "kuya" every summer is blessed to have him as a big brother. He sets a good example of excellence in your vocation, humility, community service and faithfulness in Christ. Below is an excerpt but you can read the entire article here.

Every summer, when schools are on break, Tim goes to that barangay (barrio) in the Philippines where his dad had set up his mission. There, as a virtual unknown and away from the media spotlight, he walks the streets of Cotabato and visits the markets of Digos with the Holy Bible in his hand to preach the gospel of Jesus. He saddles homeless kids on his shoulder in the slums of Sarangani and plays kuya (big brother) to them while handing out candies and chocolates. He bathes in cold water just like the natives do, and runs errands for volunteer doctors and nurses who perform surgeries on indigent patients in makeshift operating tables.

A world away from their home in Jacksonville, Florida, that faces the Atlantic, Tim finds himself in a different playing field in the island of Mindanao that is nestled in the Pacific. “It is a much different ballgame,” he says. “There, I hear no roaring chants from fans rooting for a touchdown, but deafening silence as people desire to receive the words of Jesus that I preach about. I see none of those eyes of adulation when we win games, but eyes of faith of people searching for Jesus who I talk about,” Tim relates. “You kind of find out from the get-go, what sets faith apart and what a game is just about.”

With all his outstanding achievements in football, Tim will definitely emerge as the top NFL draft pick of his 2010 class as soon he steps out of college. But he has set his sight and his heart on other things, too—that little orphanage of more than fifty children in Mindanao that his father had founded. “Those kids make me more grounded and help me put things in proper perspective,” he says. “At the end of the day, what matters may not only be about scoring a touchdown, but also winning the future of those kids who do not get the opportunity to receive that touch of hope and love that you and I may have the means of giving.”

The Amazing Manny Pacquiao!

Congratulations to Manny Pacquiao for making Filipinos around the world proud once again! The Pacman beat and knocked out a visibly disoriented Ricky Hatton in Round 2. "Pacman dethroned Hatton of his International Boxing Organization light welterweight crown. It’s Pacman’s fifth world title, joining the elite company of Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns and Floyd Mayweather Jr. who are also 5 division champs."

Agreeing with Rico Hizon, our Pambansang Kamao is respected by everyone because: 1. He works & trains hard as a boxer. 2. He is magnanimous in victory! 3. Never trash talks. 4. He loves his mother, wife & kids. 5. He is humble. and 6. Prayerful.

Reports say that during the Pacquiao-Hatton fight, near 0% crimes were committed in Metro Manila because majority of Filipinos are glued to theirs TV screens. What a good way to prove Pacquaio's positive influence to the Filipinos and his knockout punch a real crime stopper, literally!

May he remain a top athlete, an inspiration and a Godly humble human being to everyone.

What's Up with You Manny Pacquiao?

With Manny Pacquiao's recent brouhaha on which Philippine network has the TV rights to air his upcoming fight with Ricky Hatton (see related story here), its dissapointing to realize that after all the celebration that united the country on his victory, this recent recent event is a sign that it still all comes down down to money for Manny Pacquiao. I just hope that money and unethical business decisions will not destroy his reputation as an athelete and a national icon.

Message to Pacman...Would you please concentrate on your training against Hatton and not against TV network executives? Leave the business decisions to those who are trained to do it.

Some good news from Good News Pilipinas about Filipino ingenuity and the transformation of former landfill Payatas, Quezon City: A Philippine social enterprise won the Grand Prize in the international leg of the Business in Development Challenge, an online business plan competition, presented in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Rags2Riches, whose bags are produced by women from Payatas, stole the spotlight from 32 other entries, no less than the best and the brightest after a series of rigorous elimination rounds done in nine BiD satellite countries worldwide.

Pinoy's Journey to the Super Bowl

Here’s a clip of Journey’s performance during last Sunday’s Super Bowl pre-game show. For those who aren’t aware the Super Bowl is America’s football championship game and considered the biggest TV event of the year, drawing millions of American glued to their TV screens – parang PBA championship o laban ni Pacquiao sa Pilipinas. Our very own Arnel Pineda did an excellent job in showing off his talent; once again proving Filipinos are gifted musicians and can achieve anything. What a good inspiration to Filipinos.

Journey happens to be one of my favorite karaoke tunes, but the tune seem not to like me or my vocal capacity... more practice na lang muna.
