The Rock, Fatherhood and Milk

One commercial that stood out last Super-Bowl XLVII was the “Got Milk?” ad from action-star Dwayne Johnson, also known as The Rock. Why? Because it shows a noble character who was willing to do whatever it takes to get milk for his children. Even if it means chasing the milk delivery truck through the streets in his pajamas, while the city around him is in absolute commotion. I understand the urgency. An 8 oz. glass of milk contains 8 essential nutrients, including 8 grams of high-quality “body fuel” protein that will help tackle your day – who doesn’t want that for their family.
The ad was intended to promote milk and its health benefits, but there’s another message the commercial can convey to the public especially to dads. The ad was a good example and a good challenge for us dads to always do what it takes for our family. Not only to provide milk and healthy protein on the dinner table but on other important things in life - things that are non-material. Dads, reflect on these questions: Are you willing to do what it takes to protect your family? Or, to prioritize uninterrupted time with your children? Are you willing to do what it takes to stay healthy? Are you willing to do what it takes to stop any unhealthy habits? Or, are you willing to do what it takes to stay married to your spouse? There are many possible questions a dad can ask himself about self-sacrifice and it takes deep personal soul-searching to come up with an honest answer. In a culture where dads are often portrayed as marginal and awkward, The Rock and the “Got Milk?” ad tells a different story. Dads matter, a good dad puts his family’s health and all aspects of their well being his top priority. He puts their needs first before his own. A good dad can make all the difference in the chaotic world of his children’s life. And, with a glass of fresh milk, can fight off evil aliens and save the world all at the same time.
