week's class assignment is to write about a country's blogosphere. I picked Japan as my subject not only because we're required to pick a country that begins with the first letter of our first name but also in honor of the 220,000 Filipinos living in Japan including my sister who is currently stationed in a US Air Base in the country.
Japan is located in East Asia. I also know the country for its advancement in technology and at the same time it’s well preserved culture and traditions.
Based on my research through Global Voice Online, Japan has a large blogging community. In fact Japanese is the number one language of bloggers worldwide with over 70 million recorded weblogs in Japanese over taking blogs in English and Chinese respectively. Why? One blogger theorized which I think is the most compelling reasons are: (1) there are a wide variety of companies offering blog services, and (2) many people update their blogs via mobile phone (over 70% in Japan have mobile phones). Of course this response was written in Japanese and translated by a blogger at Global Voice Online.
I personally think the popularity of mobile devices in Japan (duh? they invented it) is the culprit why Japan leads the blogosphere in content and readership. I did quick Google research on blogs that originates from Japan and what I noticed was there are a lot (based on my observation) of personal dairies, video blogs, photo blogs and blog content that are posted from a portable device. Unfortunately because it’s in Japanese I can’t determine if the Japanese blogs I briefly visited delve in specific topics or content. So I wonder how much Japan ranks in terms of socially relevant and useful blog content in the world.
